NEW US GOVERNMENT MANDATED SECURITY FEE APPLIES TO AAIRPASS CUSTOMERS
As mandated by the Aviation Transportation Security Act of November 2001, a security service fee will be collected on tickets issued worldwide on/after February 1, 2002. This fee, known as the "September 11th Security Fee" will apply for flights departing from or operating wholly within the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and all U.S. Possessions. The fee will be $2.50 per enplanement with a maximum of $5.00 per one-way trip and maximum of $10.00 per round-trip. The security fee applies to all revenue passengers, including passengers traveling on AAirpass tickets.
Revenue derived from this fee goes to the new Transportation Security Administration to help fund Federal civil aviation security services. It is American Airlines' responsibility to collect and remit the fee for all passengers ticketed by American Airlines. In order to collect the applicable fees for AAirpass customers, the fees will be converted to AAirpass miles, using the current contract rate-per-mile, and then deducted from the AAirpass mileage balance once per month for each account.
The AAirpass statement for March activity (which will be sent in April), will include an entry to collect the September 11th Security Fee for February 2002 AAirpass flights. Thereafter, each month's statement will reflect the Security Fee for flights in the previous month.
